How Much Does Antenatal Care Cost in South Africa?

If you’re considering taking one of life’s exciting next steps and starting a family, you’re most certainly wondering about antenatal care – what it covers, how it can support you, and of course, what it costs.

According to the World Health Organisation, regular antenatal visits dramatically reduce risks during pregnancy and birth. That’s powerful reassurance. Whether you’ve just started your search for the perfect antenatal clinic or you’re still comparing maternity care costs, it helps to know exactly what to expect.

What is Antenatal Care?

Antenatal care is the full range of health services and support you receive while expecting your beautiful bundle of joy. This includes regular check-ups, blood tests, scans and lifestyle guidance, alongside emotional reassurance.

The benefits of antenatal services stretch far beyond basic health checks, equipping your midwife and doctors with a full picture of your pregnancy. Some aspects of antenatal care include:

  • Tracking your baby’s growth to make sure development is on course.
  • Spotting potential complications early so that the right support can be given.
  • Building a personalised health record that guides safe decisions throughout pregnancy.
  • Checking nutrition and lifestyle factors such as weight gain, blood pressure and overall wellbeing.
  • Supporting emotional and mental health by recognising signs of stress or anxiety and addressing them sooner rather than later.
  • Helping plan for birth by assessing whether natural birth or interventions are safest, and equipping you with the knowledge you need to navigate your birth at ease.

For parents, antenatal care can contribute to the confidence you feel in yourself and your body throughout pregnancy and labour, especially if you are a first-time parent. At Oxford Midwifery, our antenatal classes in Johannesburg give parents hands-on skills and reassurance to feel ready for childbirth and early parenthood too.
